Three strikes and you’re out!
Posted by paulstallard on August 2, 2008
Sally Whittle has been having fun as a PR again this week and has encountered the joy of a difficult client. So far it would appear that Sally quite likes working in PR apart from dealing with journalists and clients. Not the first person to say that I’m sure.
With regards to dealing with a difficult client I have always taken the three strikes and you’re out approach. As a PR consultant you are being paid to consult, by a client who is employing your expertise and knowledge.
Strike one – advise a client how to approach a situation, strike two – explain why it should be done this way and strike three – tell them a second time if needs be. If at this point the client still disagrees I will do what they ask in the knowledge that as a PR consultant I have advised them how to generate the best result from the given situation.
More often than not a client backs down after strike two. Alternatively you just need to massage their ego a bit and let them think what you suggest was actually their idea.
